About Walter Koschatzky:

Born on August 17, 1921 in Graz, Walter Koschatzky attended the highschool and the military college Liebenau near Graz. From 1940 to 1945 he had to perform military service; He then studied art history, history and philosophy at the University of Graz. From 1956 he headed the “Neue Galerie” at the Landesmuseum Joanneum in Graz. In 1961, he was appointed Director of the Graphic Collection Albertina in Vienna and has been in charge of this museum for 25 years, gaining a wide public reputation through scientific research and 210 exhibitions of ancient and modern art in the Albertina itself. The collection established worldwide recognition. Walter Koschatzky gave lectures at the Universities of Vienna and Salzburg, was a member of many international committees and juror at the major graphic biennials eg. in Ljubljana, Varna, Krakow and Puerto Rico. He has released numerous publications (art of graphics, art of watercolor, art of drawing, Rudolf von Alt, Albrecht Dürer’s landscape watercolors, etc.) and made art films for the Austrian Broadcasting Network -ORF (Telemuseum, Rudolf von Alt, The Century of Austrian Watercolor, Thomas Ender). Walter Koschatzky died on May 9, 2003 in Vienna.

All works on paper are admitted to the competition. Excluded is pure, graphically or digitally unprocessed photography. The maximum dimensions are 100 x 140 cm without frame and 110 x 150 cm with frame, with a maximum depth (thickness) of 15 cm. The participants must be up to max. submit three works in any technique.

There are no limits to the creative bandwith. There are no thematic guidelines.

Eligible to participate are works on paper by artists up to the age of 35.

€ 4.000 (2nd place)
€ 2.500 (3rd place)

In addition, purchases with a total value of at least € 5,000 are planned by the organizer and sponsors. The final amount of the purchase budget will be set May 2019. The prize-winning works will be purchased for € 1,000 each (in addition to the prize money) and, like the purchased works, will be transferred to the „Collection of the RC Wien-Albertina“.
