Open Call: Weave Wave – Material Agencies in Motion
DeepArtSpace, SK.Project „Weave Wave: Material Agencies in Motion“ explores the connection between fiber art and the philosophy of new materialism. The name evokes the gentle movement and interweaving of fibers with an emphasis on rhythm and continuity, thereby emphasizing the symbolism of fiber art and the poetics of materials as active agents in the creative process. Fabric and fibers are not just passive objects in this project – they are dynamic elements that actively contribute to the creation of meanings and influence the viewer’s experience through their interweaving and movement.
In the context of “forces of material in motion” we emphasize that fabrics are not only bearers of meanings, but actively shape them and intervene in the space and time in which they operate. Fiber structures and textures are part of a dynamic process where every interweaving, every movement and every layering creates variable patterns of meaning. The exhibition will present fiberart as a medium where materials become co-actors that form a dialogue between themselves, the creator and the viewer. This project opens a discussion about how art can fibers to enrich our understanding of materials and their active role in creative processes.
International exhibition „Weave Wave: Material Agencies in Motion“ will present the breadth of contemporary fiberart approaches in the Central European context and offer works that reflect the dynamics and relationships between materials and meanings within the wider ecological and cultural environment. The exhibition will be focused on the works of artists who work with various media and technological procedures within fiberart and create installations, site-specific works, video art, objects, events or performances. Selected works will explore fibers, their production, technological processes and aesthetic properties with respect to environmental, social and cultural aspects.
The exhibition is a joint project of DeepArtSpace, the Department of Sculpture at FVU AU in Banská Bystrica and the Central Slovak Gallery in Banská Bystrica. Through this international presentation and accompanying educational events, which we plan to implement in cooperation with gallery teachers from SSG, we want to introduce the concept of dynamic materialization to the public.
Open Call for artists:
Civic association DeepArtSpace in cooperation with the Department of Sculpture at FVU AU in Banská Bystrica, the Central Slovakian Gallery in Banská Bystrica announce an open call for participation in the zero year of the international exhibition „Weave Wave: Material Agencies in Motion“. The call is open to visual artists who explore the concepts of new materialism in their work through fibers and textile media. We are looking for projects that reflect the active role of materials and explore the dynamic, interactive or relational aspects of fiberart.
We welcome applications that reveal new and experimental ways of creating with textile materials, and look forward to working with artists who want to push the boundaries of fiberart.
Registration conditions:
Artists working with different media, such as installations, site-specific works, video, objects, actions, performances, participatory projects and other experimental approaches that involve fiber or textile materials, can participate.
Professional artists and students (last years of master’s studies) of art departments of art universities can participate. Individuals and artistic groups from all over the world.
The call is aimed at works that investigate technological processes, the physical properties of fibers and their aesthetic and meaningful potential. Each author can submit only one work. The work must not be older than 3 years.
The works should be realizable in the galleries and spaces in Galérie FX and Central Slovak Gallery in Banská Bystrica. The author is responsible for the packaging, insurance and shipping of his work. The package should not exceed a weight of 10 kg (artwork and including necessary installation elements) and the maximum size of the package can be up to 100 cm on any side, with a total length and circumference not exceeding 200 cm.
The costs of transportation to the place of the first exhibition in Banská Bystrica are covered by the author. The costs of return transportation are covered by the organizer.
Selection process: All submitted works will be evaluated by a committee of experts who will select the projects based on their originality, relevance to the theme of the exhibition and the ability to communicate the concepts of new materialism in the context of fiberart.
