AiR on Vorarlberg embroidery

DOCK 20, Druckwerk, and S-MAK are jointly offering a residency entitled “Between Pattern and Memory,” which aims to explore the collection, history, and present-day relevance of Vorarlberg embroidery.
At the newly opened S-MAK, embroidery is understood not only as a textile product but also as a cultural practice—an interplay of design, technique, labor, and global connections.
The residency invites participants to investigate these levels through research, artistic expression, or design, and to translate their findings into contemporary formats.

Content and Tasks For over 250 years, Lustenau’s identity has been closely linked to embroidery.

The residency involves active engagement with the S-MAK collection. Participants choose a clearly defined collection or thematic area and develop an independent research question from it.

Expected outcomes:
— Review and interpretation of archival and collection material — Development of an independent approach
— Implementation in a contemporary form (artistic, theoretical, design-based, or hybrid)

The residency is research-based. Results can be process-oriented or fragmentary (e.g., artworks, texts, essays, prototypes, installations, or performances). A public presentation is planned.

Target group: Artists, designers, theorists, and scholars in cultural studies, social sciences, and humanities with an interest in textiles, design history, material culture, or archival work. Interdisciplinary approaches are expressly encouraged.
