Puppets on Film Call

The Celluloid Golem Festival is Dusseldorf’s first festival of puppets on film.

The inaugural Celluloid Golem Festival will offer the residents of Dusseldorf and beyond a comprehensive look at the wide variety of films being made by international puppetry artists. Utilizing skillful manipulation and fiendish trickery, these puppets on film provide a unique voice to the world of film and video. Through puppetry’s pursuit of imbuing the inanimate with life and purpose, puppet films offer a wide range of experiences to audiences. Suprising, strange, heart wrenching, or beautiful – but always compelling; these works represent the timeless relevance of this ancient medium both as a means of entertainment and as a means of commenting on the human experience.

The Celluloid Golem Festival offers a venue for hard working puppets, objects, and the brilliant brains and hands behind them.

The festival will run from November 2nd to November 4th, 2018 at Filmmuseum Dusseldorf, Germany. In addition to the screenings there will also be a panel for discussion, exchange, inspiration, and networking around the art of puppetry!

Short films up to 25 minutes, where hand operated figures and objects, filmed in real time, play the main role! (Yes, that means NO films that solely rely on stop motion. Sorry.) Languages other than English or German will require English or German subtitles. The festival is focused on works intended for an adult audience.

The deadline for submissions is June 10, 2018. All submissions should include a link to an online version of your film along with a brief description of the film, its creators, and the puppets used
