The artist-in-residence programs for visual artists at the International Guest Studio Maltator, the Altstadtgalerie, the Holzfaltatelier, and the Galerieatelier Maltator Parterre hold a special place in the artist town of Gmünd (Austria).
Since 1993, at the invitation of the Artist City of Gmünd Private Foundation (formerly the Gmünd Cultural Initiative), over 180 artists from around the world have taken advantage of the opportunity to spend two months in the heart of the historic old town, working and exhibiting their work here.
A residency in the Artist City of Gmünd offers guest artists a unique opportunity to experience Austrian art and culture far from urban centers while still living in a culturally vibrant and active environment, to connect with local artists and those exhibiting in the Artist City, and to engage with the diverse cultural life.
The exciting and diverse approaches our international artists take to their creative work bring great variety and constant innovation to Gmünd, making this small medieval town cosmopolitan. Many guest artists have become good friends of the town, enjoy returning for visits, stay in touch, and follow with interest the small town’s ongoing development into an artists’ town.
